What is Transmission Media? Different type of transmission media

What is Transmission Media? Explain Different type of transmission media.

Transmission media

Transmission media is a communication channel that carries information from the sender to the receiver. It carries information in the form of bits through LAN (local area network). Data is transmitted through electromagnetic signals.

Transmission media is classified into two types.
    o Guided / wired/ bounded Transmission Medium
o Unguided /wireless/ unbounded Transmission Medium

Guided /wired/ bounded Transmission Media
Guided media is also known as wired or bounded transmission media. In bounded media, data signals are transmitted through physical connections. For physical connection, wires such as two open wire cables, twisted pair cables, fiber optic cables, and coaxial cables are used.

Common type of bounded transmission media are
1.Coaxial cables
2.Fiber optic cables
3.Twisted pair cables

Coaxial cables
Coaxial cable is also known as coax. It is an electrical cable that transmits radio frequency signals from one point to another. It is used in applications such as telephone trunk lines, broadband internet networking cables, and cable television signals.

Fiber optic cables
A fiber-optic cable is also known as an optical-fiber cable. It is about the diameter of a strand of human hair. It is capable of transmitting more data over longer distances and faster than other mediums. Optical fiber is the cable that is used in our homes, offices, and businesses to use the internet and TV services. It transfers data signals in the form of light and travels hundreds of miles significantly. It is safe because it doesn't carry current.

Twisted pair cable
Twisted pair cables are a type of guided medium. It is specially used in telephone communication and Ethernet networks. This cable is made with two separate insulated copper wires. Twisting is done because two parallel wires constitute a fine antenna. When the wires are twisted, the waves from different twists cancel out, so the wire radiates less effectively.

Unguided / wireless / unbounded Transmission Medium
Unguided media is also known as wireless or unbounded transmission media. In unbounded media, data signals are transmitted without physical connections. This means there is no connection between the source and the destination. To transmit data from source to destination, wireless media such as microwave, radio, and infrared communication are used.

Common type of unbounded transmission media are
1.Radio wave
2.Microwave
3.Infrared wave
